SUMTER DART

The following are the purposes for which this organization has been created:

  1. Assist in the rescue of animals by providing staging equipment for a compound area and providing kennels and transport equipment.
  2. Aid other humane organizations to perform animal rescue.
  3. Provide assistance to animal controls and humane societies during disasters and animal abuse and/or hoarding cases when they request our help.
  4. Provide assistance in removing animals in advance of pending disaster – mitigating possible injury or death.

Sumter DART responds to help other humane organizations as well as county agencies when animals are in need.

When Sumter DART deploys to disasters and other animal incidents under the direction of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), we must follow the policies of the HSUS when responding.

HSUS is the lead agency in most of the state declared disasters concerning animal issues.  HSUS then deploys DART teams needed to assist in rescuing animals.

It is important to understand that only DART trained personnel can respond in a disaster.

Sumter DART will be hosting HSUS DART training.  This particular class is extensive, starting on a Friday evening, and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Sumter DART will be having it’s own training sessions for our team members on different topics, such as:  mouth to snout CPR, compound and shelter training, understanding DART equipment, handling large and small animals, safety issues, current FEMA requirements,  etc.

If you are interested in becoming a Sumter DART member or volunteer, please e-mail  to:  ronnie@sumterdart.org   Type: Sumter DART  in your subject line.  E-mail your name, address, phone number, and any other pertinent information you would like us to know.
